The use of drones is growing exponentially: Drones are agile, fast and efficient. Drone-based applications and services in agriculture are evolving rapidly. One of these applications is using drones for spraying crop protection agents. In Asia, drones have already been in use for decades for crop spraying in particular for wetlands, or steep and hilly terrain. In Europe, experiences are growing for instance in the steep vineyards in Germany. Also, interest is growing to use drones for spot spraying or for the avoidance of soil compaction.
So what is the state-of-the-art concerning technology, applications, regulations? What are the pros and cons? And most importantly, when will spray drones lift-off in practice?

Since December 2017, the CAPIGI Foundation has been established to build a strong community where we can build a bridge and bring together the different stakeholders; Government, Industry, Sector & Research. They connect people from these stakeholder groups to discuss the application of geospatial data and systems in agriculture. CAPIGI’s goal is to stimulate discussions and networking. Sharing knowledge from different groups is of high importance to create new ideas, come to new innovations and solutions for difficult problems in the AG sector.
